Lamar Hudgens

Lamar founded Barrier Island Kayaks in 1996. He has now accumulated over 30 years of kayaking experience with over 22,000 miles behind the paddle. He has worked as head guide for Wildwater Ltd. on the Chattooga River, managed High Country Outfitters on the Ocoee River, worked as a trip leader and instructor for Nantahala Outdoor Center and Senior Field Staff rock climbing and paddling instructor for Camp Woodson Therapeutic Wilderness Camp. Lamar's guiding experience on Section IV of the Chattooga River was written up in National Geographic in April 1983.

Lamar was awarded the BCU 5 Star in 2004 from Nigel Dennis at an assessment in Anglesey, Wales, UK. At that time, this award was held by less than 15 paddlers in the United States and qualifies Lamar as one of the highest ranking BCU sea coaches in the US. His passion for open sea paddling has taken him to Wales four times and Lamar now leads advanced sea kayak trips to the UK.

Kaitlyn will be heading our way from Maine where she is studying Adventure Recreation Business Management at the University of Maine-Orono. Kaitlyn is an outdoor jack of all trades. When she is not leading kayak trips Kaitlyn can be found Ice Climbing, Nordic telemark skiing or riding horses. Kaitlyn is also a Wilderness First Responder.

Bob Patterson

Bob is a true outdoorsman on and off the water. Bob proved his ability to handle challenging sea conditions in Anglesey, Wales in September of 2003 paddling the UK's reknowned tidal race at Penryn Mawr. Paddling 8 foot seas in 25 knot winds and 6 knot tidal currents, he demonstrated the skills to handle 5 Star conditions.

Bob worked as a Park Ranger on Hammocks Beach State Park and for the US Forest Service in both Sumpter and Cherokee National Forest. His superior knowledge of the coastal environment enables Bob to make each sea kayak trip a true ecological adventure.

When not on the water Bob and his wife Melanie, a Nurse Practioner, are busy raising two daughters, Eliza and Nora.

Christina Davis

Christina, known most of her life as Moffitt, has spent much of her life either in or on the water. She was a nationally ranked swimmer and quailfied for the nationals numerous times. She has been a certified life guard for 12 years. Other aquatic skills include surfing, wake boarding, coaching swimming and of course sea kayaking.

Christina lived in Park City, Utah and worked in marketing for BMW spending much of her free time pursuing her passion for snowboarding, rock climbing and mountaineering in the Wind River range. She joined the staff of Barrier island Kayaks in 2002.

Christina has an amazing natural talent to paddle a sea kayak and learned to roll her boat in about 15 minutes. She qualifies at the BCU 3 Star level and is working to assess for the 4 Star.

Lance is a seasoned paddler with a burning passion for Sea Kayaking. He has lead trips along the NC Outer Banks for ECU and Elon University Outdoor Adventure Programs. Lance lived and paddled in New Zealand while working on his degree in Outdoor Education. Lance will be leading trips for us as well as working as an instructor.
